A Call to Elizabeth Crook Panting Wilkes Cranney's Posterity

I have found that many have copied Elizabeth's story from this blog and posted it in ancestry.com.  I have been disappointed that those descendants of Elizabeth have not left their names or contact information.  I had hoped that we, who are descended from her, might connect through this blog.  There are missing documents that we need to find, and that can only happen as we come together and search whatever papers, documents, etc. have been passed down through the various family lines.  I also hoped that we might find pictures to share, etc.  With the digital capabilities of this century, there is no excuse for us not to share all we have.  I also think it would be nice for us to know our extended family.  I am sure that we would be astonished to know how many extended relatives we have crossed paths with in our life time.  I make a fervent request that those of you who are descended from Elizabeth, who read this blog, and possibly are even copying parts of it for your own records....please leave your contact information so that we might all connect and become part of one large family that we know and with whom we could share.

As an incentive, I have an account of Elizabeth's death that I would love to share with those who will leave their contact information and how they are related to Elizabeth.

  1. Hi, I've tried to post on your blog several times before but for some reason it wouldn't let me. Hopefully this time it will work. I am not a desdendant of Elizabeth but my husband is through her daughter Jane. Jane is his great grandmother. We don't have a lot of information, but are willing to share and help however we can. Elizabeth is such an inspiration to me and I have grown to love her through my research about her. Loved the movie by the way :)

    1. Anelisa, Wonderful to hear from you. Interestingly, it seems I have made more contact with Jane's descendants than any other. Some contacted me through T.C. I would love to share with you. Checked out your blog, which I enjoyed. We have several common interests. Let me know how to connect. I will send the account of Elizabeth's final days.

    2. I was going through the blog and noticed that I had a lot of spellings in my answer to this!! So I deleted it and started again. I don't know who removed your comment, Anelisa. I am not an expert at this blogging stuff so I apology about it being removed. I am sure there was nothing offensive in it. Strange.

Also, wondering if you got the account of Elizabeth's death?

    2. Peter, I had read about your father. Your family line seems to be great at serving in the community and nation.

Do you have a copy of Elizabeth's autiobiography, which she supposedly wrote? I would love to have a copy of it if someone has it. I would also like to find some pictures of Elizabeth's parents. Does anyone in your family have something like that?

Thank you for any information/pictures, etc that you might be able to share. I will post them on this blog for all the descendents to see. Would love to see pictures of Jane. Did she have any long lasting infirmities from the handcart trip? Do you have a biography/autobiography of her? I would love to read it.

  5. Hi, Karen. Thanks for posting on Ancestry and easily finding your blog... I also bought myself a Handcart ordainment. Thanks.
    My email: dawnfm39@gmail.com
I have collected lots of books about the handcart companies but never really any documents on Elizabeth Crook.
I'm from Jane Panting Bell's 10 kid Clara Annetta. (Last 3 years I've been researching Idaho ancestors.)
I have a book on the Charles Morris Bell Family by B. Byington, and TELL MY STORY, TOO by Jolene S. Allphin.
That's about it. Love too have more... I've even heard Elizabeth's Dairy is at the Salt Lake Library to view?

    3. "Tell My Story Too" is in its 8th edition and can be purchased online through www.DeseretBook.com. It is a paperbook and costs $25.00. You might be interested in a book that Janet Crook has compiled on Jane Panting Bell. She is doing a 2nd edition in a few weeks so if you are interested contact her as soon as possible at crookedfam@gmail.com. I don't know about the Charles Morris Bell family by B. Byington. Hopefully Dawn has answered your message.

Thank you Karen, for all your work. My husband Gerold Crook is related to Elizabeth Cranney through her brother Samuel Lane Crook. We, too, are interested in gathering and documenting correct information. Samuel's posterity resided in the Star Valley Wyoming area and in the Idaho Falls Idaho area. Actually we are having a reunion August 3, 2013 in Blackfoot Idaho for this whole group and would love to include any one from Elizabeth's line. My email is crookedfam@gmail.com. Thanks! Janet Crook

    1. I thought I had posted an answer to this, Janet. Thank you for your comments. We have been to Star Valley several times in the last few years and have met a few of Samuel descendents there. I would love to come to the reunion, but will not be able to. It has been a very crazy year for us and we need to stay home for a while to get some major projects done. But please comment on the blog about your reunion so all can see it. There are continual visitors to the blog each week and most are searching for information on Elizabeth. If you can send more information on the reunion, I will send it to my daughters who live closer to Blackfoot. Hopefully they will be able to come! Thank you!

    2. Dawn, I tried sending you an email, replying to the noreply unfortunately. Just realized I was doing that! I doubt that Elizabeth's dairy is in the Salt Lake Library as I contacted Jolene S. Allphin to try to find out about the dairy. The first time I had heard about it was from the book “More Than Miracles.” Jolene was planning to contact some descendent of Elizabeth's in Idaho to get a hold of it for the next edition of her book, "Tell My Story Too". I am concerned about her copywriting Elizabeth's story in her book so that we, Elizabeth’s descendents, cannot use it any longer in any of our genealogical books. Hopefully, that will not be a problem.

I would love to have anything you have on the Crooks that you feel you can share. My email is hendusue@gmail.com.

      Thanks, Karen

PS. I orginally posted this answer, but discovered I had made so many typos I looked almost illiterate! Cancelled and started again!

  8. Hi Karen,
Jane Panting was my great grandmother. It would be great if you could sent the info about Jane. My email is atucker1977@msn.com. Please email me the information if you still have it.
    Thanks. Amy

  9. Amy, I don't have very much on Jane beyond birth and death information even though I have had many of her descendents make connection through this blog and ancestry.com. Unfortunately, they haven't shared much information. Look at the other comments under this entry and you will see more of her descendents and can easily connect with them, I think. Also in my more recent blog entries, I mention that Janet Crook has put out a book on Samuel Lane Crook, Elizabeth's brother. She does have some information in it about Elizabeth. She is going to be printing up some more books in a couple of weeks. If you are interested or want more information, you may contact Janet at crookedfam@gmail.com. If you need the birth and death information, I will be glad to send that. Hope that this information is helpful to you.

  10. Hi Karen, my name is Lindsey Cranney. I know I am a little late joining this bandwagon, but I would love to learn more about Elizabeth. After doing some genealogy digging, I've come to learn that she and Hyrum King Cranney are my great-great-great grandparents. I've seen the film 17 Miracles a handful of times, and can testify of its truthfulness, but now it holds much deeper roots in my heart. If you could email any information to lacranney@hotmail.com, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

  12. Hi Jamie!

I am so sorry that I haven't been on the blog for quite a while. I never seem to have time to get on the internet and then my computer stopped getting on! Anyway, glad to hear from you. We are the same generation descended from Elizabeth. Recently I discovered that there is a William Wilkes living in our town! I tried to contact him, but apparently he is old and was having some kind of treatment. I have not been able to call back, as was requested. I am looking forward to visiting him. I imagine that he is your relative also.

    Karen

  13. Hi Karen,

We come through the Wilkes line as well. My husband's father is a nephew of William Wilkes I believe. Thanks so much for your work in preserving our family history!

  14. I am obviously not very good at this blogging business! I just now am reading your comment, Alisa. I am ashamed to admit that I still haven't gotten with William. Does your family have any pictures, documents, histories relating to Elizabeth or her family? I would love to be able to post them on this site. While I do have some materials, it is limited and there must be more out there, right? hendusue@gmail.com. I would love having anyone share what they can. Thank you!
